7 Things You Should Know Before Going to a Hot Yoga Class

Hot Yoga at Kali: What to know before you go

There are a number of hot yoga classes in Glasgow, if you have never been to one you might be wondering what to expect. So, to help you out, in this blog the Kali team answer your most commonly asked questions to give you a quick wins guide for what you can expect at one of our hot yoga classes.

How hot is hot yoga?

First and foremost let’s go back to basics – what is hot yoga in the first place? Hot yoga is, in it’s simplest form, yoga that is practiced in a hot room that is generally heated to anywhere between 25 degrees and 40 degrees Celsius. At the Kali Collective we have two temperatures that our hot yoga studio the Destroyer is heated to – 32 degrees and 26 degrees. Two types of classes are practiced at 32 degrees; hot morning sweat and hot vinyasa. And two at 26 degrees dance and warm yin and restorative.

Why should I practice hot yoga?

Hot yoga gets our body and muscles warm which is great for helping you to explore deeper into postures than you would in a normal temperature room. Because practicing yoga in a hot room can help increase our circulation and causes our muscles to vasodilate it can also be of benefit to those with arthritic pain.

What type of mat do I need to bring?

If you are practicing a faster paced hot yoga class we won’t deny that things are going to get sweaty! The best yoga mat you can bring is one that you know you won’t slide on. Most studios will offer mats for you to rent or borrow to practice on but be sure to check before turning up. Our recommendation for hot yoga mats would be one from Liforme, Jade or Lululemon mats which are renowned for their grip.

What do I wear for hot yoga?

First and foremost and as with all yoga classes wear something that you feel comfortable moving in. Breathable lightweight fabrics are best to wear for a hot yoga practice. Shorts are a great option if you feel comfortable to practice in them, if you decide to opt for leggings make sure the fabric doesn’t feel too thick or heavy.

What do I need to bring for a hot yoga class?

Please make sure to bring water with you for your class, because you will be practicing in a hot yoga room you will lose fluid in your sweat so it’s important to replenish and rehydrate. It is also a good idea to bring a hot yoga towel to help mop up any unwanted moisture on your body. You can buy hot yoga towels that are the length and size of your mat many people find that these help with absorbing sweat moisture and ensuring you can keep your grip steady as you practice.

How hard is a hot yoga class?

This depends on the type of class you take! If you choose to practice a hot vinyasa class or hot morning sweat you can expect things to get a bit spicy and a little sweaty! On the other hand if you practice warm yin and restorative the slower pace and warmer atmosphere are there to help create a soothing space for you to relax in.

How can I start hot yoga?

You can start hot yoga by joining a hot yoga class near you. If you are working with any injuries or health conditions is good to touch base with the instructor or studio prior to turning up to class so they are made aware.
